"I'll tell ya' one thing. It weren't no human being that burned off that land that we come across. Not even a stick or a shrub pine left."
defunkt theatre presents Sam Shepard's Back Bog Beast Bait. In a run down shack in the Louisiana bayou, a pregnant woman named Maria summons two men from the high country to protect her from a terrifying monster that communicates with its mind and is slaughtering every living thing in its path.
"What hunger you ever seen that leaves a carcass layin' like that? Something's goin' on down here. Somethin' horrible's going on."
Over the course of the evening, the hired men and Maria are joined by a delirious preacher, who appears to have been attacked by the beast, and a mysterious young swamp girl with claims of magical powers who comes baring potions and magic mushrooms. Paranoia and violence threaten to erupt among the refugees as fear leads them to turn on one another.
"The mystery was real and all the people felt the presence of the beast. Some say they saw it coming in their dreams."
Frightening, funny, and always electrifying, Back Bog Beast Bait explores the dynamics of a group of strangers facing an apocalyptic threat. defunkt is proud to present this early work from one of Americas greatest playwrights.
