Season 15: Out of the Wild

“I feel like there’s something new that wasn’t there before. Right here. Something warm. Something that’s getting bigger day by day.”

In the Forest, She Grew Fangs
(West Coast Premiere)

Lucy lives with her grandmother in a small rural town that could be Anywhere, USA. Tormented by her high school classmates who find out about her troubled past and her mother’s drug addiction, she is a lonely outsider who spends her time wandering the forest that lies just outside of town. When she develops a crush on Jenny, a glamorous new student, Lucy experiences strange visions, grows physically stronger and her senses sharpen- just as mysteriously savaged deer carcasses begin appearing in the woods. Using the archetypical story of Little Red Riding Hood as a backdrop for a timely exploration of teen bullying In the Forest, She Grew Fangs is a riveting evening of theater; the Washington Post describes it as “part timeless adolescent psychodrama, part harsh truths about growing up in our texting-and-social-media era, and part bloodshot fairy tale.”

“There’s something...liver than live about her, you know?”

Precious Little
(Portland Premiere)

Brodie is a Doctor of Linguistics in her mid 40s. Single, gay and at the top of her field she decides to have a baby on her own, but early in her pregnancy she learns that the child she is carrying may have a genetic abnormality. She encounters a colorful array of characters (a much younger girlfriend, an elderly speaker of a dying language, and a gorilla at the zoo) in her quest to determine whether she could accept and love a child that may never be able to speak to her. Funny, thought provoking and deeply moving, Precious Little is a Portland premiere that playwright Madeleine George describes as “a play about the limits but also the luxuries of language, about what we cherish about our uniquely human capacity for language as well as what it costs us to communicate in this way.”

“I don’t think people who aren’t addicts really understand what we, we who know, we, who have felt saved by substances, feel when we ingest them...”

The Undiscovered Country
(World Premiere)

A trio of interwoven tales of addiction combine to make a scintillating evening of theater exploring one of the major health epidemics of our time. Set in Portland in the present day, this world premiere explores different facets of addiction in our community and how the power of love can both push people further into its grip or offer the hope of redemption. Collaborating with Paul Angelo after last season’s hit Let A Hundred Flowers Bloom, and DC Copeland a rising young American playwright, who has chosen to make Portland her home, defunkt creates a world class evening of theater that is entirely Made In Oregon.
